460 cyclists to tackle one of Britain’s steepest town-centre climbs – spectators urged to “bring the noise”
This Sunday (27th October), Matlock’s iconic Bank Road will host the nation’s elite hill climbers as Matlock Cycling Club welcomes the CTT National Hillclimb Championship 2025 – and organisers are calling on the local community to turn out in force to support the riders.
A Gruelling Challenge Through the Heart of Town
Starting at 10:45am, 460 competitors will take on the 834-metre climb up Bank Road, battling gradients averaging 14% and peaking at a lung-busting 20% just above Smedley Street. The climb runs straight through Matlock’s town centre, making it one of the most spectacular and accessible cycling events in the national calendar.
“Bank Road is one of the steepest town-centre climbs in the country and makes for a great spectacle,” say organisers. This will be the third time the National Championships have been held here, following successful events in 2008 and 2016.
Historic First for Para Athletes
This year marks a milestone as the championships include para athletes for the first time, adding to the inclusive spirit of the event.
How to Watch
Road closures will be in place from 10:00am, with racing running until approximately 3:12pm (with a break from 12:56-1:15pm). Spectators can position themselves anywhere along the route to cheer on riders of all ages and abilities.
“You are an integral part of what makes this event what it is,” urge the organisers. “Please bring the noise and support the riders as they scale the steep slope of Bank Road.”
Supporting Local Charities
The event will raise funds for three worthy causes: Cavendish Cancer Care (beneficiary of a bumper raffle), Derbyshire Blood Bikes, and Aquabox. Cowbells will be distributed by the charities at Event HQ – grab one and make some noise while supporting great causes.
