Matlock, Derbyshire

Work. Learn. Live somewhere worth it.

There's a version of this where everything is in balance: the work done, the children learning, the hills walked. That version doesn't exist.

What does exist is Matlock, and the ongoing negotiation of doing all three in the same place on the same days. This site is about that negotiation: what's here, what it makes possible, and what a good week can actually look like.

About this site

Why piggy in the middle?

In the children's game, the person in the middle is caught between competing demands, intercepting what passes between two sides, trying not to drop anything. It seemed like an honest description of the daily reality of balancing paid work, home education, and a family life, rather than a triumphant one.

Matlock is the grounding. The site is specifically about doing this here, in this patch of Derbyshire, rather than in the abstract. The place shapes what's possible: the trails, the venues, the rhythm of the seasons, the community. Somewhere else would be a different site.

The five ways into the site reflect how the competing demands actually present themselves. Some days the question is where: what's nearby, what's reachable. Some days it's what kind of thing you need. Sometimes it's when: what's on, what the season allows. Sometimes you already know what you're looking for and just need to find it quickly. And sometimes you don't know where to start, and the most useful thing is someone pointing you in a direction. No single arrangement answers all of those, so there are five.
