By season
What Matlock and the Peak District offer depends heavily on the time of year. This is a guide to the year's rhythm.
December · January · February
The lights season. Matlock Bath's illuminations run into November, the Victorian Market fills Hall Leys in early December, and January is better than its reputation for walking when the crowds have gone.

March · April · May
The trails clear out. Easter brings family-focused events around the valley. The White Peak Loop becomes genuinely pleasant from late March. The LEVEL Centre is open year-round but exhibitions often change in spring.
June · July · August
School holidays bring the crowds. Cromford Mills is at its best in August. The trails and cycling routes reward early starts. The Peak District is busy but still worth it — especially midweek.
September · October · November
The best season for walking, particularly October when the light is extraordinary and half-term creates a natural break. The National Hillclimb Championship turns Bank Road into a spectator event. The Illuminations start at Matlock Bath from late summer through autumn.
Any time
Some of what makes Matlock useful doesn't depend on the season — the trails are always there, the heritage sites are open most of the year, and the accommodation options don't close in February.
